Voting Rights and the Criminal Justice System

Voting Rights and the Criminal Justice System

Whether and how to afford the right to vote to incarcerated and formerly incarcerated individuals are questions that have long generated legal and policy controversy. This panel discussion, presented by the Elections Research Center at UW–Madison, addresses current approaches and challenges to offender re-enfranchisement and voting in correctional facilities.

Featured speakers include Naila Awan (New York Civil Liberties Union), Professor Michael Massoglia (UW-Madison Sociology), Professor Michael Morse (Penn Carey Law School), and Professor Michael Leo Owens (Emory Political Science). The panel is moderated by the Election Research Center’s Director, Professor Barry Burden.

League Discussion Units will meet (mostly via Zoom) to discuss the issues raised by this forum during the third week of January. (The virtual unit is meeting the fourth week, on January 24.) If you aren’t already a member of a discussion unit, please let the leader know you plan to attend so you can get a Zoom link, if needed.
