1. What in your professional and community background qualifies you for this elective office? I’m a returning school board member, currently serving as the Board’s treasurer. I have served on regional and national boards for various organizations, and have a deep understanding of policy writing, strategic planning, and solid governance. I am also an engaged community member in Mount Horeb, who regularly volunteers for church outreach programs, civic causes, and committee work for the betterment of our village. I have two children in the MHASD, and enjoy volunteering for their schools, too.

2. How should your district address disparities in student achievement? In recent years, our district has moved away from using only concrete test scores and assessment data to demonstrate student achievement, and instead has integrated meaningful student growth benchmarks. There are fewer disparities, and happier students and parents, if we help each student reach their own individual growth potential instead of expecting each student to uniformly meet specific achievement levels that may be unrealistic. We are also recognizing students who are high achievers outside of the traditional academic realm.

3. Are there additional steps your district should take to effectively recruit and retain an outstanding and diverse workforce? I remain hopeful that school funding from the state level will see meaningful increases in the 2019-2021 budget cycle. Adequate financial support will not only give our students the education they deserve, but will help attract and retain the best staff. Partnering with our district staff to find continuing education opportunities to meet their interests and goals remains a priority, as well as supporting their day to day needs in and out of the classroom.

4. Is there an issue that particularly motivates you to serve on the school board? I’m the most passionate about student equity. Many of our students have comfortable, supportive home lives and a high aptitude for learning. But some children are saddled with significant burdens, disabilities, and hardships that make even attending school a struggle, much less hoping to succeed in their studies. How can we reach these students? How can we best support these students and their families? While a very complex issue, I remain grateful to serve in a district that understands and works toward student equity.
