Comment on Election Integrity Commission

Action alert from LWVUS President Chris Carson on 9/11/17:

President Trump’s sham Commission will have their second meeting this week. Since its formation in May, this Commission has launched an assault on the right to vote.

Democracy works best when everyone participates. That’s why we need YOU to send the Commission a message to address their efforts to suppress the vote.

This sham Commission is not interested in facts, but rather, false accusations in order to implement dangerous election policy. The agenda of this Commission is part of a wider effort to suppress the vote, keep certain politicians in power and undermine our elections by spreading falsehoods about our election system.

Politicians should not be putting up additional barriers that prevent people from voting. We should be addressing polling place closures, cuts to early voting and onerous voter ID laws. We should not have elected officials openly scheming to illegally purge registered voters or collect their personal information.

Tell the sham Commission you want to see them work on ways to increase participation and modernize our elections.

As the sham Commission meets next week, let’s encourage them to build trust and confidence in our democratic process. The freedom to vote is the cornerstone of our democracy. Voting brings us together as Americans – it is the one time when we are all equal.

The League is dedicated to ensuring that all eligible voters – particularly those from traditionally underrepresented or underserved communities, including first-time voters, non-college youth, new citizens, communities of color, the elderly and low-income Americans – have the opportunity and the information to exercise their right to vote.
