The Many Factors of Judicial Independence The Honorable Patience Drake Roggensack Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice This event was supported in part with funds from the Joyce Foundation through the League of Women Voters of Wisconsin Education Fund. You may wish to read more about some issues raised during Justice Roggensack's presentation and the Q&A that followed. These materials have been forwarded from Margi Kindig (who got them from Andrea Kaminski at the state LWVWI office) for use at the unit discussions about judicial independence. The following short articles explain the recusal petition LWVWI filed 2 years ago: Article 1 Article 2 Article 3 The last one has a link to the actual petition LWVWI filed.
In addition, here is a column Justice Roggensack wrote defending her vote to adopt the WMC & Realtors Assoc. rule on recusal verbatim. Her logic deserves to be scrutinized. You can hear the testimony (click on "League President's testimony..." on the right hand side) Melanie Ramey gave before the Special Committee on Judicial Discipline and Recusal.
LWVWI has also started a judicial observation project.
Here is the LWVWI response to a proposal put forward by Justice Roggensack.
And, last, but most timely, the WSJ story that appeared in Wednesday's paper about Justice Abrahamson's proposals, which will be discussed at an administrative conference next week. If you would like to read the actual memo, email Margi Kindig at margikindig@gmail.com and she can forward it to you.
